TEHRAN (IQNA) – A group of Iranian Ta’zieh (passion play) performers will be sent to Germany to hold performances in the two European countries.

Iranian Ta’zieh Performers to Go to Germany, Poland

According to Seyed Ali Mojani, the Iranian Cultural Attaché in Berlin, they will arrive in Berlin on Thursday.

Their trip to Europe comes at the invitation of Iran’s Cultural Center in Germany’s capital.

He said the Ta’zieh group, headed by Seyfollah Shokri, comes from the city of Qazvin, some 180 kilometers west of Tehran.

They will stay in Germany for ten days holding Ta’zieh performances in the cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt, he noted.

Mojani added that the group will then leave for Poland for Ta’zieh performances in Warsaw.

Speaking to IQNA, Shokri said it will be the fifth year the group has performances outside Iran.

He referred to Ta’zieh as the only art that is exclusively an Iranian Shia art, saying it is important that the world learn about its artistic, ritualistic and religious aspects.

Ta’zieh is a theatrical performance recounting the events that took place during the 680 Battle of Karbala.

It is aimed at commemorating Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam.

Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and 72 of his loyal companions, were martyred on Ashura in the battle of Karbala against the second Umayyad caliph, Yazid I. Imam Hussein was killed after he refused to pledge allegiance to the tyrant ruler.

Ta’zieh rituals symbolize the eternal and unwavering stance of truth against falsehood and humanity's struggle against tyranny.

Ta’zieh was registered on UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011.
