TEHRAN (IQNA) – The preliminary stage of a national Quran competition named Karbala Award will begin at the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) in Karbala, Iraq, on Wednesday.

The Sayyid al-Awsia Hall of the holy mausoleum will host the contest, according to the public relations office of the Astan (custodianship) of the mausoleum.

The contenders will compete in three categories, namely Quran memorization, recitation and Tafseer (interpretation).

The final round is slated to be held on Tuesday, June 26.

Those attending the memorization and Tafseer categories have already passed a written exam.

Winners of the first and second ranks will be awarded pilgrimage packages to the Makkah in Saudi Arabia and Mashhad in Iran while the ones who come third in each category will receive cash prizes.

Quranic activities have significantly developed in Iraq since the 2003 overthrow of former dictator Saddam Hussein.

There has been a growing trend of Quranic programs such as competitions, recitation sessions and educational programs held in the country in recent years.
