Equal Inheritance Rights for Women, Men Un-Islamic: Tunisia Quranic Society
Salih Radid, a spokesman for the “Society for National Coordination to Defend the Quran, Constitution and Fair Development” said the bill contradicts the teachings of Islam and undermines women’s interest, shemsfm website reported.
Speaking to reporters in a press conference in Tunis, he added that introducing the bill has been dictated by outsiders and colonialists, especially France.
Radid said it also runs counter to the constitution of Tunisia, based on which Islam is the official religion of the country.
Tunisia’s President Beji Caid Essebsi proposed the bill in 2017 and the cabinet ministers approved it in November this year.
It will be put to a vote in the parliament next week.
Last month, Egypt’s Mufti Shawki Allam also said that granting women and men equal inheritance rights violates Islamic Sharia.
In a statement, Alam said the concept of gender equality in inheritance is against Islam's teachings.
Islamic Sharia allows men to inherit double what a woman would receive.
In Islam, Ijtihad is not employed where authentic texts (Quran and Hadith) are considered unambiguous with regard to the matter in question, he said.
All inheritance laws are detailed in Quran in a clear way, he added.
