TEHRAN (IQNA) – Various programs are planned to be held across Iran on Friday to mark the 32nd anniversary of the demise of Imam Khomeini (RA), an official said.

Nosratollah Lotfi, the deputy head of Iran’s Islamic Development Organization, said magnificently holding ceremonies commemorating the late founder of the Islamic Republic is a public and religious duty.

He said that like previous years, this year’s programs will include a speech to be delivered by Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Moussavi Khomeini, better known as Imam Khomeini, engineered Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to the overthrow of the US-backed Shah of Iran.

Born in 1902, he grew to become the iconic leader of the Iranian nation’s struggle in the 1970s against the centuries-old monarchical tyranny.

Imam Khomeini passed away on June 3, 1989, at the age of 87.

Lofti said the event of Khordad 15 will also be commemorated with various programs in the country on Saturday.

The Movement of 15 Khordad took place on June 5 in protest against arrest of Imam Khomeini.

On June 3, 1963, Imam Khomeini made a historical speech against the dependence of the Shah regime on foreign powers, and its support for Israel.

Imam Khomeini's speech followed by public reaction about political situation in Iran and why the government of an Islamic state must support the Zionists in their crackdown on Muslim Palestinians.

The Shah regime's secret police arrested Imam Khomeini which immediately sparked major public demonstrations of support that were eventually crushed by government troops in tanks.

This uprising marked a turning point in the fall of the Pahlavi dynasty later.
