TEHRAN (IQNA) - Head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) Sayyed Ammar Hakim said the emergence of Takfiri groups like ISIL was the result of sectarian prejudices.

Hakim made the remark in an address to the opening of the 28th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran, adding that these extremist groups are a threat to Muslims and the whole world.
The so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants have been committing heinous crimes in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon in recent months.
They made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.
Noting that some 80 countries support the terrorist group, Hakim appreciated the role of the Islamic Republic of Iran in helping Iraq combat the terrorist group.
He further underlined the importance of Islamic unity and said that without unity, Muslims cannot confront today’s challenges.
Concluding his remarks, the senior Iraqi cleric underscored support for the cause of Palestine.
The 28th International Islamic Unity Conference began on Wednesday morning with the participation of 500 scholars and political and religious figures from 65 countries.
The theme of “United Muslim Ummah, Challenges and Strategies” will be discussed in the three-day event.
